Stop The Violence Movement was formed by Boogie Down Productions founder Krs One, who decided that enough was enough after learning co-founder Scott La Rock was shot to death back in 1987. The group consists of (KRS-One, D-Nice & Ms. Melodie) ,Stetsasonic (Delite, Daddy-O, Wise, and Frukwan) Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Just-Ice, Heavy D, and Public Enemy.
The aim behind their message was very powerful and impactful at a time when crack cocaine was in it’s prime destroying thousands of black families all across America. The murder rate was so high back in the 80’s it led to one of the largest mass incarcerations on minorities in U.S. history.
Twenty-eight years later the condition for most black people making less than 30K a year hasn’t changed much. There’s still work to be done to assure minorities are rising above conditions that doomed us in the past such as “Black On Black Crime”.
Until this day there has never been a group of rappers to come together like the Stop The Violence movement to talk to people that are oppressed and fed up. I personally think this song should be remade to give some form of hope to the hopeless in current times like this.
